Epidermoid Cyst Removal

What is an Epidermoid Cyst?

An epidermoid cyst is a small, round lump that develops beneath the skin. It occurs when skin cells, instead of shedding naturally, become trapped and form a sac filled with keratin (a soft, cheese-like material). These cysts can appear anywhere on the body but are most commonly found on the face, neck, scalp, back, or chest.

Epidermoid cysts usually grow slowly over time and may stay small for years. They are typically:

  • Skin-coloured or slightly yellow
  • Smooth and firm to the touch
  • Movable under the skin

While painless in most cases, a cyst can become red, tender, or swollen if inflamed or infected.

How Are Epidermoid Cysts Removed?

At Derma Revive Surgical, we remove epidermoid cysts through minor surgery under local anaesthetic. The procedure is designed to fully remove the cyst and its sac, reducing the chance of recurrence:

  • The area is cleaned and numbed with local anaesthetic.
  • A small incision is made over the cyst.
  • The practitioner carefully frees and removes the cyst sac in its entirety.
  • The skin is closed with fine stitches to encourage neat healing.
  • The cyst may be sent for histological analysis if needed.

Our experienced team treats all skin types and always assesses the risk of keloid or hypertrophic scarring, particularly in clients with a known tendency for raised scars. Please note that we do not remove cysts from intimate areas.

Why Remove an Epidermoid Cyst?

While cysts are harmless, you may choose to have one removed if it:

  • Becomes irritated, inflamed, or repeatedly infected
  • Grows larger over time
  • Causes discomfort or cosmetic concern
  • Has ruptured or started leaking fluid
  • Removing the cyst surgically is the most reliable way to prevent it from refilling or returning.

Aftercare and Recovery

Following cyst removal, you may have a small wound that requires simple care at home. You may notice mild swelling or tenderness for a few days. Our team provides detailed aftercare instructions, including how to clean the area and when to return for stitch removal if necessary. Most people heal within 1–2 weeks, with a small scar that fades over time.

We remain available to support your recovery and address any concerns.

Are There Any Risks?

Minor surgery for cyst removal is a safe and well-established procedure. As with any surgery, small risks include:

  • Temporary swelling or bruising
  • Minor bleeding
  • Infection (rare with proper care)
  • Scarring (we take precautions to minimise this)

Our practitioners discuss these risks during your consultation and take care to minimise complications.
