A keloid is a type of scar that forms when the body produces too much collagen during healing. Unlike normal scars, keloids can continue to enlarge over time and often feel firm, shiny, or rubbery. They may be itchy, tender, or occasionally painful. Keloids tend not to fade naturally and can affect people of any skin type, though they are more common in individuals with darker skin or a known tendency to form raised scars.
Steroid injections are considered one of the most effective first-line treatments for keloid scars. The treatment involves carefully injecting a corticosteroid solution directly into the scar. This helps to reduce inflammation, soften the scar tissue, and slow down the excessive collagen production that causes the keloid to grow. Over time, the scar becomes flatter, smoother, and less noticeable.
The procedure is quick, taking only a few minutes, and is performed in our clinic under sterile conditions. While some improvement may be seen after one session, keloids often respond best to a course of injections, spaced several weeks apart. During your consultation, we will assess your scar and recommend a tailored treatment plan based on its size, location, and how long it has been present.
Most people tolerate steroid injections well. The treated area may feel slightly tender or look a little red for a short time after each injection, but this usually settles within a day or two. There is no downtime, and you can return to normal activities straight away. Gradual improvement in the appearance and feel of the scar occurs over several weeks, with continued benefit as the treatment course progresses.
Steroid injection therapy is generally safe when carried out by experienced practitioners. Possible side effects can include temporary thinning or lightening of the skin in the treated area or mild discomfort during the injection. In some cases, small blood vessels in the skin may become more visible. We take care to adjust the dose and technique to suit your scar and skin type, helping to reduce the risk of unwanted effects.
