Mole Removal

What Are Moles?

Moles are clusters of pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) that typically appear as small brown, black, or flesh-coloured spots on the skin. Most moles develop during childhood or adolescence, but they can appear at any age. Although the majority are harmless, it’s important to monitor moles for any changes, such as:

  • Growth in size
  • Irregular or blurred borders
  • Changes in colour
  • Bleeding, itching, or crusting

Any of these changes should be checked by a medical professional to rule out melanoma or other skin conditions.

How Are Moles Removed?

At Derma Revive Surgical, mole removal is carried out with minor surgical excision under local anaesthetic. Here’s what to expect:

  • The area is cleansed and numbed with local anaesthetic to ensure a pain-free procedure.
  • A small incision is made around the mole to remove it completely, often including a margin of healthy skin if there is any concern about abnormal cells.
  • The area is closed with fine stitches to promote neat healing and reduce scarring.
  • The mole is typically sent for histology (laboratory analysis) to check for any abnormal or cancerous cells.

Our team carefully assesses each mole and your skin type, including any risk of keloid scarring, before recommending removal. Mole removal is performed on most areas of the body, although we do not treat moles on intimate areas.

Why Remove a Mole?

You may wish to have a mole removed for several reasons:

  • Cosmetic concern (if the mole is in a prominent location)
  • Irritation (if the mole catches on clothing, jewellery, or during shaving)
  • Medical concern (if the mole has changed in appearance or is suspicious)

Our team ensures you understand your options and any medical recommendations before proceeding.

Aftercare and Recovery

Following mole removal, you may have a small wound that requires simple care at home. Our practitioners provide detailed aftercare instructions, including how to keep the area clean and when to return for stitch removal if necessary. Most wounds heal within 1–2 weeks, although a small scar is likely where the mole was removed.

We provide follow-up support and monitor your healing to ensure you are happy with the result.

Are There Any Risks?

Mole removal is a safe and well-established procedure. As with any minor surgery, there is a small risk of:

  • Mild bleeding or swelling
  • Infection (rare with proper care)
  • Scarring (we take precautions to minimise this)

We discuss these risks fully during your consultation, especially if you have a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring.
