Skin Lesion Removal

What Are Skin Lesions?

A skin lesion is a broad term for any abnormal change on the skin’s surface. Lesions can take many forms, including:

  • Moles (naevi)
  • Skin tags (acrochordons)
  • Epidermoid cysts
  • Seborrhoeic keratoses
  • Warts
  • Other benign lumps

Most lesions are harmless, but some may change in size, shape, or colour over time. It is important to have any changing or concerning skin lesion assessed by a medical professional to rule out conditions such as skin cancer.

How Are Skin Lesions Removed?

At Derma Revive Surgical, skin lesion removal is performed by experienced practitioners using minor surgical techniques tailored to the type and location of the lesion. The procedure typically involves:

  • Cleaning and numbing the area with local anaesthetic.
  • Surgically excising (cutting out) the lesion, often including a small margin of healthy skin if needed.
  • Closing the wound with fine stitches to promote neat healing and reduce scarring.
  • Sending the lesion for histology (laboratory analysis) where appropriate, to confirm its nature.

We treat all skin types and always assess the risk of keloid or hypertrophic scarring, particularly in clients who have a known history of raised scars. Skin lesions are removed from most areas of the body, except intimate areas.

Why Remove a Skin Lesion?

Skin lesion removal may be recommended or chosen for several reasons:

  • Medical concern: The lesion is changing, bleeding, or causing symptoms.
  • Repeated irritation: The lesion catches on clothing, jewellery, or razors.
  • Cosmetic reasons: The lesion is in a prominent location or causing self-consciousness.
  • Preventing complications: In cases where a lesion is prone to becoming inflamed or infected.

During your consultation, our practitioners will assess the lesion, discuss your options, and provide honest guidance on whether removal is appropriate.

Aftercare and Recovery

Following removal, you can expect a small wound that usually heals within 1–2 weeks. Some swelling, redness, or mild tenderness is normal in the early stages. Our team provides clear aftercare instructions, including advice on keeping the area clean and promoting optimal healing. If stitches are used, we will arrange a follow-up for their removal.

Are There Any Risks?

Skin lesion removal is a safe, well-established procedure. As with any minor surgery, potential risks include:

  • Minor bleeding or bruising
  • Infection (rare when the area is cared for properly)
  • Scarring (we use techniques to minimise this risk)

Your practitioner will discuss these risks fully during your consultation and take every precaution to reduce them.
